Was Mark Twain a racist?

This
is a case for.

This
is a case against.

And here's
the man himself.

The truth is rarely simple.

Well, that's pretty injun-hating alright. You know what it reminds me of? How Irish people speak about travellers.

I'll allow that he was obviously writing that from observation, though there's some wildly biased language in there too - so I wonder was he observing fucked over, disenfrachised, alcoholic Indians?

I don't know what tribe Mr T was talking about, but I doubt the review improved things for them or their neighbours.

Interesting point about travellers. Any honest traveller's blogs that you know of?

I have no idea. Has blogging reached the Travelling Community??

I remember my father talking about a Traveller programme he'd heard on the radio, where they were doing readings form the Bible about rolling the stones from the door of the tomb... clearly meaningful for them :)

Newstalk, for all its faults, did some terrific features on travellers, warts and all.

Genuinely insightful stuff.

When searching for a blog for a member of the travelling community, Mr Google suggests

"knackerblog.blogspot.com:

The Irish travelling community gets a hard time. Perhaps a blog would give people valuable insight into their way of life.

Example entries: Wednesday: Thurles. Went door to door looking for handouts. Robbed some clothes off some washing lines. Went home in a 05 Hi-Ace. Had sex with my sister/wife.

Thursday: Clonmel. Went door to door looking for handouts. Robbed some clothes off some washing lines. Went home in a 05 Hi-Ace. Had sex with my sister/wife.
